Active Pickups: Guitar pickups that use a battery’s electricity as a preamp boost before sending the to the amplifier. Active pickups require a battery located somewhere on or in the guitar. Active pickups have a tighter, cleaner sound, and are generally geared towards the heavy metal genre in guitars and basses. With the additional electrical current, the active pickups are generally wound less than a passive pickup. Because of this, the strings pickup more tonal vibrations and less humming and buzzing from other electronics and instruments.
Simpler Definition: Electrified boosted pickup.
